No matter how far two souls are from one another.. if they are made for each other and they believe it.. they will meet (again) somewhere.. someday.. somehow..Falling in love comes in different ways. It doesn't need a long time to develop. It is about your feelings towards the one you love. If you love someone, it is not about the time you spend together. It is about how you spend your time together. Distance doesn't matter for people who are truly in love.
Dear John is about two persons, John and Savannah, who fell in love but didn't have much time to be together. They exchanged letters to know about what's happening to them while they are far away from each other. After some time, the girl got engaged with another man and so the guy burned all of the letters that he kept and continued in the army until he got a message that his father was sent to the hospital because of stroke.
There's something I wanna tell you. After I got shot, you wanna know the very first thing that entered my mind? Before I blacked out? Coins. I'm eight years old again on a tour of the U.S. Mint. I'm listening to a guy explain how coins are made. How they're punched out of sheet metal. How they're rimmed and beveled. How they're stamped and cleaned. And how each and every batch of coin are personally examined just in case any of them slipped though with the slightest imperfection. That's what popped into my head. I'm a Coin of the United States Army. I was minted in the year 1980. I've been punched from sheet metal. I've been stamped and cleaned. My edges have been rimmed and beveled. But now I have two small holes in me. I'm no longer in perfect condition.
So there's something else I wanna tell you. Right before everything went black, you wanna know the very last thing that entered my mind? You.
- John Tyreke (Message to his father)
John went to the hospital and made a letter to his father. He read it to him. His father died.
He then went to Savannah's place and talked about what happened before and why she got married to another man. Savannah married one of their friends who had an autistic child and is suffering cancer. Savannah's husband eventually died.
I'll see you soon then?.. Say it back.
When I say it, you say it, remember?..
John, just say it.
-Savannah (To John while he leaves)
Savannah asked John if she'll see him again. They always say "See you soon then" before parting. John didn't answer and said goodbye.
The last part of the film showed John walking with his bicycle and saw Savannah in the coffee shop.
The problem with time, I've learned, whether it's those first two weeks I got to spend with you, or the final two months I got to spend with him, eventually time always runs out. I have no idea where you are out there in the world, John. But I understand that I lost the right to know these things long ago. No matter how many years go by, I know one thing to be as true as ever was - I'll see you soon then.
-Savannah (Letter to John after he left her)
